These are drops, tablets or powders that can be "dropped into" or added to water. They typically consist of minerals in liquid, powder or compressed tablet form, which interact with the water to elevate the pH and create a mild negative charge or ORP (oxidation reduction potential).
While they are convenient - can be carried in a pocket or purse - most will typically have limitations with regard to how much of the product should be used in a 24-hour period. Also, these products offer no filtration - they are simply adding to/altering the water - whether it's filtered or not. If you want "clean" alkaline water you'll have to add start with water that has been filtered or purchase bottled water.
The size and portability of these products makes them convenient to carry and a good alternative for quick trips but you should continue the long-term expense of purchasing the product along with the cost of purchasing bottled water if you want to avoid the contaminants found in regular tap water. Finally, there shouldn't be a limit on how much of a natural substance you can consume in a day. Personally, I try to avoid using products with any sort of "do not exceed this much usage in this period of time" warnings.
Sticks
Another popular choice are "stick" products when can be dropped into a bottle of water. These are a little less convenient than the drop-in portable alkalizing products but they can also be slightly more effective with regard to raising the ORP of the water.
What you don't get with these "stick" portable ionizers is filtration. While some reduce chlorine levels somewhat, others offer no filtration at all. Another thing you don't get is "instant" ionized water. Most of these products have to remain in contact with the water for up to 15 minutes before the water becomes fully "charged." Adding one of these stick products to a bottle of water and then shaking the bottle can speed up the ionizing process.
Another downside to this type of portable water ionizer option is maintenance. Many of them require that you keep them covered in water after the first use. If you're on the go, topping off your water bottle to keep the stick covered can be inconvenient. You may end up carrying around two bottles - one with your ionizing stick and the other with extra water so you can add more to your "stick" bottle to keep your little ionizer stick covered with water.
Some stick ionizer products also require cleaning every couple of weeks - another inconvenience. Add to this the cost of replacing the sticks - and the cost of buying filtered water to use with them - and these products may not be your most cost effective option.
Pitchers
Though they are called pitchers, these are not bulky products that can't be carried around. They are larger than the ionizing stick and drop-in products but they are still small enough to fit in a backpack, larger purse or other tote.
The biggest benefit of pitcher-style portable water ionizers is their ability to actually filter the water while also alkalizing and ionizing. This means that you can use water from any tap at any location and know that common contaminants are being removed.
Of the pitcher-style products the most popular has been the H2Go Portable water ionizer - formerly sold as the Waterman Pitcher. When removed and flipped over, the cap of the H2Go becomes a reservoir that fits onto the filter of the product. The reservoir is filled with tap water and flows down through the filter into the pitcher.
The filter contains media that removes chlorine, bacteria and other common contaminants and significantly reduces heavy metals. Other media inside the filter interacts with the minerals in the water to alkalize and ionized the water as it passes through. You can filter 16 ounces of water in just over one minute.
Testing of the H2Go using pH and ORP meters has shown pH levels as high as 10.5 with ORP readings as high as -350. That ORP is comparable to what you would expect from lower-end water ionizers.
